As individual we have our own personality traits, so too with our children. No matter how many books on parenting that you have read, when it comes to parenting your child you have your own approach. Most of the time as parent we aspect that the children to live up to our expectations, which led to repetitions of telling, correcting and grounding.
This leave us to wonder “what would work?” Parenting seems like a survival challenge trying you to keep your cool. Striving to not to burst at your child for leaving the toys everywhere again for the hundredth times in that particular year.
Each child is unique with their own individuality, and the importance to recognize these personality behavior traits well to understand what excites the child, how they response to disappointments and retorting to anger.
DISC assesses the different types of behavioral traits in a person. Dominance, Influencing, Steadiness and Compliant are what the abbreviation stands for. By understanding yours and your child’s behavioral DISC traits, you know the roots of their irritation and what would motivate them.
“So what does DISC measures?”
Let’s look at children with the D behavioral traits, their roots of irritation came from when there’s uncertainty. Example when the child asks whether he/she could go to the park to play, and the occupied parent answer ‘maybe’, this will cause the child to feel frustrated and demanded for clear answer while the parent is still occupied with errands.
A child with I behavioral traits, loves to be the center of attention. So when this child is not getting any attention when he is showing off his new ‘gym tricks’ while the parents are engaged with house chores, this cause annoyance to him/her and may start picking on the other siblings for attention.
DISC behavioral traits can be assessed through some fun and quick questionnaires for children and help to distinguish what their behavioral patterns are as some may have combinations of two or three of these traits.
