Career Key

About The Programme

Theoretical Orientation

The theoretical orientation of the CareerKeys™ programme is based on two notable career development theories, namely Donald Super’s Developmental Self-Concept Theory and John Holland’s Theory of Career Choice.

Donald Super’s greatest contribution to career development has been the emphasis on the importance of the development of self-concept. He believes that self-concept changes over time and develops as a result of experience.

John Holland’s theory explains work-related behaviour – which career choices are likely to lead to job success and satisfaction; how people of the same personality type working together in a job create a work environment that fits their type; and how people search for environments where they can use their skills and abilities to express their values and attitudes.

In helping teachers to engage the students on their career exploration and planning, they will be posed three questions which act as guideposts on the student’s individual journeys.

What Will You Get From The Programme

  • CareerKeys™ incorporates a holistic approach that serves to enhance students’ awareness in all three questions in order to help them to make sounds and well-balanced decisions regarding their future.

Question 1: Unveiling Personal Strengths and Career Direction

Students are given a preliminary assessment to help them understand where they currently stand. Possessing a strong sense of where they are heading and having an awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses will enable the students to create and attain a realistic career progression plan. This component is aimed at nurturing students’ self-awareness on their personal strengths and how they fit together with their passion and aspirations.

Question 2: Creating Your Personal Brand, Talents, Skills, Values and Interests

We need to have clarity about our Personal Brand, which consists of our identity and unique qualities that can be used as a base to chart our career path. The aim of this component is to direct students towards discovering their personal brand and how they can successfully use this to excel in their ideal career. Students will also discover their internal motivators that drive their personal decisions.

Students will also get to apply their understanding of personality styles to find careers to match their natural tendencies. This will be done using tools like DISCInsights™ Personality System, the Career Choice Workbook, Values Clarification exercises and the Ministry of Education’s eCareers portal.

Question 3: Setting Goals & Making Plans

Upon getting a clearer understanding of their personal branding and direction, we will guide them to make feasible action plans in chasing their career goals. The students will be made aware of the academic grades as pre-requisites of their individually-set goals.
